We are glad that Yamaha has chosen to re-introduce the YZF-R3 despite the wait. It isn't a major update, but Yamaha now offers the essential bits that we had been complaining about. They have launched the 2018 YZF-R3 today, at the Auto Expo. And if you’re eager to read what’s new in the R3, here it goes - it now gets dual-channel ABS and a better deserved set of Metzeler tyres.

The R3 continues to be powered by a 321cc, parallel twin motor, which produces 41bhp at 10,750rpm and 29.6Nm at 9,000rpm. A few years back, we had reviewed the motorcycle (which you can read here) and it went on to become our most sought motorcycle during its time at the TopGear garage. We often pined about slapping on Pirellis or Metzelers to give it that extra bit of grip. Now that prayer stands answered as does the wish for ABS. The 2018 R3 comes with Metzeler tyres, which should offer more, ahem, grip, says Yamaha. It’s available in two colours - racing blue and magna black.

Priced at Rs 3.48 lakh, the R3 goes up against the Kawasaki Ninja 300, Benelli 302R and, of course, the fan favourite, KTM's RC390. While it was away, TVS has also unleashed the RR310 to make for even stiffer competition. That should be an interesting story to work out.
