Mexican Wave at Polo Cup
Our report from the first race of this season's Polo Cup
The same day Roger Federer made history at Wimbledon beating home favourite Andy Murray, another young lad made history in the quiet town of Coimbatore. Mexican driver, Diego Duez from Team JK Tyre, won the second race of the VW Polo Cup, thus becoming the first ever foreign driver to win in the Polo Cup race.
Deigo, who started third on the grid, was overtly aggressive from the start and jumped into the lead after passing both Ajay Kini and Alisha and comfortably maintained his lead till the end of the race. Behind him there was a close battle for second place with Alisha impressively holding her own ahead of Prashanth. Pole sitter Ajay could only manage 4th position after a poor start He was followed by the only female driver on the circuit Alisha Abdullah who was followed in by rookie Prashanth Tharani Singh at the Kari Motor Speedway. The Mexican drove faultlessly, and didn’t give any chance for Alisha to catch him up with a lead of over 4 seconds in the first three laps itself.
Earlier in the day, Avdumber Hedge won an eventful first race that saw a big crash between Siddharth Sharma and Tabish Khan which brought out the safety car before the race was eventually red-flagged. On the restart, Mihir Hede got ahead of Avdumber Hede, who missed out a gear on the paddle shift. However the rules state that the aggregate time has to be taken from the first and second part of the race. This meant that Avdumber finished ahead of Mihir on aggregate time to win the first race of the season.
After using diesel power for two years this year VW decided to shift to petrol powered TSi cars for the event. This 1.4-litre unit develops 140bhp and is the same unit that does duty on the all new petrol Jetta. It comes with paddle-shift automatic gearboxes. The results were evident, since the best times posted in qualifying were better than 2 seconds from last years times. Dr. John Chacko, President and MD, VW India said “I am glad to see the easy transformation to the all new petrol TSI Race Polo to give our drivers an opportunity to race in a more powerful car.”
The next round takes place at the same track on the last weekend of this month.
