Feature: Rock and hard place

With hairpins barely wide enough to allow the XC40 a clean line through, the descent proved more challenging than the ascent to the pass. Combine that with a lot more rubble on the road and a couple of deep water crossings and the little Volvo was really earning its stripes. There was some good news too, the downhill section had mended the range forecast and I could breathe easy again as it steadily climbed. That was until we rounded a corner and came up on a JCB punching loose rock out of the mountainside.

The narrow road had collapsed under the outcrop and there wasn’t enough space for even the small Volvo to make it through. An hour or so later, in fading light, heavy machinery had managed to scrape out enough of the mountainside to allow a car to go through the shaky passage.
