Ford EcoSport: Family Car of the Year

What does the typical urban Indian family want? A stylish car, with space for two adults, two kids, maybe a dog, some luggage, enough convenience features and compact dimensions. There are plenty of those kind of cars around here. But what the EcoSport offers is something the world has never had before – an under four-metre car with massive ground clearance – about 200mm of it.

As critics, we do see a lot of flaws in the EcoSport. It’s not as good a driver’s car as the old Fords. The steering doesn’t have the same chatty demeanour as old Fords. There’s a bit of roll around corners. Space in the cabin is cramped. And the 1.0-litre EcoBoost engine has scope for improvement. But even we can’t deny the Ford’s versatility. It’s not easy to engineer something like this and expect everything to be perfect. All that ground clearance needs to packed into a height that doesn’t make the car too much of a pain to handle. That four-metre floorpan needs to pack in an engine, two rows of seats and a boot.
