KTM Duke 390: The Hue of Madness

That motor really is all-new, too. Contrary to what I thought, extracting an extra 18bhp takes a lot more than simply widening the piston’s hole. Only something called ‘finger followers’ are the same as before. And I’m pretty sure they have nothing to do with severed digits in the crankcase. Which is a good thing, because you’ll need them to hang on to the 390’s handlebars.

The Duke 390’s numbers are impressive, but you truly understand it means business after attempting to become an orange streak from standstill. A run to 100kph takes around 5.5 seconds according to what the seat of my pants tells me. And going into a fast, slightly downhill sweeper, the familiar-looking speedometer shows an urgent ‘165’. And it feels every bit like 165kph too.
