TG Top 5: Entry-level hatchbacks under Rs 5 lakh

You think you've worked hard for a good appraisal this year? Expecting a big fat raise? Planning to upgrade from two wheels to four? If yes, then we've made the process of zeroing in on your first car a bit easy by charting out the top five entry-level hatchbacks under Rs 5 lakh.

Here's the list, starting with the most affordable hatchback in the world, the Nano.

Tata Nano

Since the Nano was first launched, it has gone through several updates, making it more of a conventional car than before. No other car quite matches the Nano’s ease of use. The interiors have been improved over time and the little Tata now comes with better quality and finish levels.

Power is supplied to the rear wheels by the tiny 624cc 2cyl petrol engine churning out 37bhp and 51Nm of peak torque. The small car is now more endearing thanks to the introduction of an AMT gearbox, which along with the power steering, makes driving the Nano in urban traffic effortless.

The Nano starts from Rs 2.06 lakh and goes up to Rs 3.03 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi) for the top end AMT-equipped XTA variant. The automatic is quite frugal and returns a claimed fuel efficiency figure of 21.9kpl.
