Available now: Bentley Flying Spur V8

Find the W12 motor a bit excessive? Make the world a greener place... with a V8

You will remember the new Bentley Flying Spur. It was, after all, launched less than a year ago. You will also remember its wallet-unfriendly 6.0-litre, twin-turbo W12 power plant. Yes, the one with the big fat 616bhp and 800Nm of torque.

If you found that to be way over-the-top, you can now have a Flying Spur with a smaller engine. It's a 4.0-litre V8, with two turbos nestling in the cylinder banks. There's less power here, but 500bhp and 660Nm of torque isn't exactly what you'd label 'inadequate' in any case.

Also, this motor comes with cylinder deactivation tech, so when you're not gunning it, it'll be a tame four-cylinder, and when you cane it, you get the full V8 experience. Power goes to all four wheels (but the rears get more of it) through an eight-speed auto 'box.

The 0-100kph time takes a hit (up to 5.2 seconds for the V8 compared to the W12's 4.6), as does top speed (295kph on the V8, 322kph on the W12), but really, even that much performance should get you to that all-important meeting well in time.

Since you'd like to be driven around more often than not, here's something important: the V8 comes with a rear bench seat as standard, so you don't get lumbar support, individual adjustments or heated seats. You can, however, ask Bentley to turn it into a proper four-seater, or a 4+1, in case your middle passenger happens to be someone you don't like very much.

Outside, the changes are subtle - the Bentley wings have a red centre, the front bumper grille is finished in black, and the chrome exhaust tips are shaped to look like 8s that have fallen asleep.

Base price for a Flying Spur is Rs 3.10 crore (ex-showroom, Delhi), and that's before you dive into Bentley's never-ending personalisation options. Will you save the planet by buying a V8, or does nothing short of a W12 do the FS justice?
