BMW 1 series headed to India in 2013

Hello 2013. You look bright already. At least for the ones who love driving.

BMW has made no bones about the fact that the 1 series has been a genuine proposition for the Indian market, and has now announced its intentions to launch the car in our market by the end of this year.

The car, to be assembled at BMW's plant in Chennai alongside the 3 & 5 series and X1 & X3, will most likely be available with one petrol and diesel engine each - the petrol variant being the 118i will carry a 1.6-litre turbo motor producing 170bhp and 250Nm of torque, while the 120d diesel will feature a 2-litre turbo-diesel making 184bhp and 380Nm of twist. Both engines will be mated to the same 8-speed automatic gearbox, with drive going to the rear wheels. Watch the drool.

With the lower-powered 116i, 116d & 118d being produced at the same plant for the export markets, we might even see those variants trickle in some time after the launch. At a fairly reduced price, of course.

Apart from the 1er, this year will also see the facelifted 7 series and the refreshed X1, along with a price hike across the range.

Interestingly, as seen with the Mercedes-Benz CLA that came to light not so long ago, there will be a three-box sedan version based on the 1 series platform that will be revealed later on, along with a small crossover sharing the same underpinnings. Expect prices for the 1 series to range between Rs 21 lakh for the base petrol to Rs 25 lakh for the top-end diesel, ex-showroom India.

Now, with the B-Class already in town and the A-Class expected to be here soon, how long will it be before the little BeeEm sees further competition in the form of the Audi A3?
