Bookings open for Mercedes' GLA

Germany's latest pseudo SUV to hit our shores around September, will come with a petrol and a diesel engine

Mercedes threw a surprise at us when it pulled the covers off its tiny new SUV, the GLA-Class at the Delhi Auto Expo earlier this year. We'd told you then that it'd find its way into our market within a few months, and now, Mercedes will happily accept your cheque and put your name on the first list of customers for its brawny little offering.

To give you a brief overview of the GLA, let's just say that it is an A-Class that's hit the gym, gained a fair bit of muscle, and now wants to take on the Audi Q3 and the BMW X1. It should be available with a couple of four-cylinder engines, which, according to our sources, will be the 1.8-litre, 184bhp, 285Nm turbocharged petrol, and the 2.2-litre, 134bhp, 300Nm diesel. A seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox will come standard.

You can pay Rs 1 lakh to secure your very own GLA, and dealers have already started accepting orders. It will be available in four different shades - brown, black, silver and white. And yes, the official launch is expected to take place around September.

Price? Well, Mercedes needs to place it above the A and the B-Class, but it needs to exercise caution, as it cannot price the GLA too high. So, we expect it to sport a price tag in the region of Rs 40-45 lakh.

Who will come out on top in the battle of the pint-sized German SUVs?
