Driving Test: Rohit Shetty
Before the release of his latest film, Bol Bachchan, we caught up with him to talk about cars...
Did you pass your driving test the first time?
I started driving when I was 15, so I passed the test because by then, I had experience.
How was it? Talk us through the test…
It was funny, in fact. The officer sat next to me and told me to do a figure 8. After doing some 8s, I got bored and did a 6 and then a 5, then a 4!
Who taught you to drive? What was their teaching style?
Actually, there were a lot of people involved. A cousin first taught me, then my mom’s brother taught me a bit. Then I started practising by myself. My uncle was quite nice. He used to give me the keys and sit next to me, and that’s how I started.
What car did you learn to drive in?
The first Maruti 800... the DX. Also on a Premier Padmini.
What was the first car you bought?
I got a Skoda Octavia as my first car some 7-8 years ago. I still have it.
What’s the best car you’ve ever owned?
My BMW X6. It’s a year old, but it’s something else. It’s a four-seater, so obviously there’s the Indian mentality, “Such a costly car and only seats four?” I tell my friends, “I’m not a taxi driver – it’s for me”.
What’s your dream car?
I want to buy an old Mustang and I’m not getting one. I’ve been searching for quite a while now. It’s my dream car because I’ve grown up watching it in films like Bullitt. It’s the one car I want to buy, and I will for sure.
What caused your first crash?
I was in class 2, and my Dad had bought a new Mahindra Jeep. One day I started the Jeep. I don’t know how my legs reached the pedals, but it was in gear, and I took the Jeep into a gutter.
What’s the worst thing a passenger can say when you’re driving?
Sporty or soft?
Ferrari or Lamborghini?
Crap car or public transport?
Big ’n’ heavy or small ’n’ light?

Back seat or up front?
Get oily, or pay a man to fix it?
Pay a man to fix it.
Manual or auto?

Out of Jeremy, James, Richard and The Stig, which one are you?
