It's Indonesian International Motor Show (IIMS) time, which automatically means it's MPV launch time! Datsun showed the Go+, an MPV designed for the needs of the discerning Indonesian MPV buyer only a couple of days back, and after releasing sketches some time ago, Honda's now brought its Mobilio MPV prototype to the IIMS.

It was no secret that the Mobilio would be built on the Brio platform, and as you can see from these official pictures, it shares the look too. The front is very similar to the Brio/Amaze, save for a reshaped front bumper and a thick bar of chrome slapped onto the nose. As the sketches depicted, the car does get that kink in the beltline, sharp creases, bolstered rear wheelarches, floating D-pillar, faux cooling vents in the rear bumper and those very BMW-ey tail-lights.

Also, this isn't a lightly altered Brio - Honda has stretched the car to 4390mm, so you know the Mobilio will not exchange interior space for excise benefits. The Mobilio's wheelbase is longer than the Amaze's, and it's taller as well. Ground clearance is a considerable 185mm.

We only have a sketch of the Mobilio's interior for now, but what you can clearly see is that there will be no space crunch on the inside. Better still, the existence of boot space does not depend on whether the third row is occupied or not. That it will share a large majority of its parts with the Brio/Amaze is a certainty.

The Mobilio will be sold with a 1.5-litre, four-cylinder petrol engine in Indonesia for now, but what it will definitely get is the Amaze's 1.5-litre diesel when it comes to India.

Even though Honda calls this a prototype, make no mistake, this is very nearly the finished product. An India debut at the Auto Expo, with sales commencing mid-2014 doesn't sound too bad for the Maruti Ertiga-challenging Mobilio, does it?
