We at TG love automobiles. I mean, we love everything which has the word speed associated with it. If you tell us that you have a bicycle which can do 80kph, then expect the Stig to knock on your doors, the next morning. Is there a new supercar coming to India? No, not a supercar, but a super train. Virgin is going to construct a Hyperloop track between Mumbai and Pune. This will cover the distance of around 150km in 25 minutes.
So how does this supersonic train work? The carbon fibre pod hovers on the track due to magnetic levitation produced by the superconductors. Due to its aerodynamic design and as the pod will run, err, float inside a vacuum chamber it will achieve an unimaginable speed. If you’re thinking of enrolling your name as its operator, then I have a bad news for you. The Hyperloop is a fully autonomous train, so no operator needed, then. The Hyperloop will travel at more than 1,000kph. Although during its trial runs, it reached 385kph, Virgin says that their target is to reach 1,233kph.
The company says that once the all-electric set to transport passengers from Mumbai to Pune, it could reduce emissions by 150,000 tons, annually.
“I believe Virgin Hyperloop One could have the same impact upon India in the 21st century as trains did in the 20th century. The Pune-Mumbai route is ideal first corridor as a part of a national Hyperloop network that could dramatically reduce travel times between India’s major cities to as little as two hours,” said Richard Branson, founder of the Virgin group.
The project will be undertaken in two phases –Virgin will first develop a test track between the two cities and then after all the safety protocols are met, they will build the remaining track. The company plans to build these supersonic pods around the world.
Now to the main question, do we really need something like this? Umm, of course, yes. Only an unwise person will ever say no to a train which can do over 1,000kph.
