Hyundai and Audi tie-up to develop fuel cell technology

They believe that this tie up will speed the development of fuel cell electric vehicles

Hyundai Motor Group and Audi have entered into a multi-year agreement to develop fuel cell electric vehicle (FCEV) components and technologies together. They believe that working together and sharing technology will aid development and bringing down the cost of hydrogen-powered vehicles, making it an alternative to more conventional EVs.

Audi is responsible for the development of fuel cell technology within the VW group. This deal will allow other VW brands to take full advantage of Hyundai’s FCEV parts supply chain, since the automaker has been offering fuel cell SUVs since 2013 (the ix35 and the Nexo), and is currently selling them in 18 countries around the world.

“The fuel cell is the most systematic form of electric driving and thus a potent asset in our technology portfolio for the emission-free premium mobility of the future,” said Peter Mertens, Board Member for Technical Development at Audi AG. “On our FCEV roadmap, we are joining forces with strong partners such as Hyundai. For the breakthrough of this sustainable technology, cooperation is the smart way to leading innovations with attractive cost structures.”

This cross licensing will benefit both companies including Kia Motors. The deal will allow both companies to access each other’s intellectual property and fuel cell components. Hyundai Motor Group will grant its counterpart the access to parts that are based on Hyundai’s know-how accumulated from the development of ix35 Fuel Cell as well as Nexo, a fuel cell electric vehicle that has a range of 805km.

Hyundai hopes that this move will create greater demand for their vehicles such as its ix35 and bring down costs to make the technology profitable.
