Just another day, just another midlife update

In case you were thrilled by the #AllNewXcent hashtag, we're sorry to douse your excitement. This is not a new car. Yes, it has received a more thorough going-over than most facelifts, but that's about it. The Xcent - now three years old - needed a shot in the arm to keep going in the face of hotter competition, and so the 2017 Xcent.

There's no hiding the fact that Hyundai has tried to take the Xcent upmarket with the refresh. A healthy dose of Fluidic Sculpture 2.0 has been administered to the X, so it now sports a big, chrome-lined grille, a new front bumper, new tail-lamps and LED DRLs. It's an attempt to make it look more like the Elantra. You be the judge.

More importantly, the Xcent gets the new 1.2-litre diesel, which replaces the 1.1. The three-cylinder motor puts out 74bhp and 190Nm of torque, and Hyundai claims it'll return 25.4 kilometres to a litre. The 1.2-litre petrol, meanwhile, stays unchanged.

Inside, there's new beige upholstery and a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple Car Play and Android Auto and Mirror Link and Face my Book (made the last one up). Two front airbags are standard across the range, but ABS -- along with the new 15-inch alloys and the infotainment system - is only offered on the top SX and SX (O) trims.

Interestingly, Hyundai hasn't killed off the pre-facelift Xcent. That'll continue to be sold in the fleet market with the 'Prime' suffix.

Introductory pricing sees the Xcent undercut most of its rivals, but will that be enough to see through the tidal wave that'll arrive in the shape of the new Maruti DZire?
