Audi has revealed the much-awaited prices of its all-new 'small' sedan, the A3. The base diesel variant plays the value card well and starts at an ex-Delhi price of Rs 22.95 lakh. That's approximately Rs 27 lakh on-road. The more powerful petrol will cost Rs 28.95 lakh ex-Delhi, which should mean an on-road price of approximately Rs 33 lakh.

The A3 comes with two engine options - the 2.0-litre, inline-four diesel with 140bhp, and the 1.8 TFSI petrol that churns around 175bhp. Unfortunately, neither model gets quattro, but the A3 is handsomely equipped, with practically every creature comfort packed in as standard. There will be four trim levels on offer for the diesel - Attraction, Premium, Premium Plus and Technology. Petrol will only come in a Premium Plus trim. The base diesel variant, which is attractively priced, misses out on power seat controls and climate control options. The Premium variant in diesel is an absolute no-compromise deal.

Audi India Brand Director, Joe King, insists this is India's first proper compact luxury sedan. "Small doesn't mean it will be a compromise," he exclaims. The A3 will complement the Q3 in its product range, according to him.

Work on the car had begun in 2008. The initial design brief was to make a compact yet sporty looking sedan with a squat stance. And it is a handsome-looking car.

The A3 has been designed at Ingolstadt where a team of 300 designers are based. Interestingly, the team consists of people from over 17 countries, including India. And the results are there for all to see. For example, knowing Indian customers' penchant for proper multimedia systems in their cars, Audi has kept its MMI infotainment system as a standard feature on all A3 variants. It also ended up building one of its slimmest MMI screens ever in the process.

With the launch of the sensibly-priced A3, Audi looks better-equipped to hold on to its No.1 luxury car maker position in India.

Audi A3, ex-Delhi prices:
35 TDI Attraction: Rs 22.95 lakh
35 TDI Premium: Rs 25.95 lakh
35 TDI Premium Plus: Rs 29.95 lakh
35 TDI Technology: Rs 32.66 lakh
40 TFSI Premium Plus: Rs 28.95 lakh
