Just imagine. You recently bought yourself a Jaguar XJ – one of the best premium luxury sedan one could buy for sub-Rs 1.5 crore. You feel on the top of the world. One fine evening, with a great sense of pride you’re getting in the back of your luxury sedan and just then your neighbour shows you the objectionable finger while parking his brand new XJ Ultimate. You comfort yourself thinking it’s just another variant with a new badge and few extra goodies.

Obviously your ego won’t allow you to confront him and get the details out. So we thought we would let you know what your XJ lacks compared to the car next door. So here goes. The XJ Ultimate made its debut at the Beijing Motor show, back in April 2012, and its only now that Jaguar has made it available to its Indian clientele. You may not be able to distinguish the Ultimate from the regular XJ at first, but a careful inspection will reveal its altered air-intakes at front, LED daytime running lights, exclusive 20-inch Maroa forged alloy wheels and new chrome finished oval tailpipes at the rear. It also comes with ‘Ultimate’ badges at the rear and on the front fenders.
Since the XJ is more about pleasing its rear occupants, the engineers went ahead and spent substantial amount of time and money in giving the owners an ‘Ultimate’ experience. It all starts with the rear bench being replaced by individual powered seats that are heated and cooled and offer you a massage. A new leather-trimmed centre-console that runs along the length of the interior now bisects the seats. The centre-console features an aluminum pop-up tray table, a couple of champagne flutes and a cooler. The rear occupants also get a stow-away switch to push the front seat forward to create additional legroom.
The Ultimate variants will be offered with Meridian in-car audio system with 15-channel amplifier and 20 speakers. The rear occupants also get two eight-inch high-resolution screens that can be connected via the DVD player, TV tuner or external media player through the Rear Media Interface. You also get individual wireless headphones and a pair of third-generation iPads with wireless keypads.
On the mechanical bits, the Ultimate variant is powered by the XJ’s existing engine line-up of 5.0-litre V8 supercharged petrol and a 3.0-litre V6 turbo-diesel. Jaguar, however, claims to have revised the air-sprung rear suspension in order to give its occupants a more comfortable ride.
All these additional features are available at a premium, certainly. The XJ Ultimate V6 diesel will set you back by Rs 1.78 crore, while the V8 petrol will make your poorer by Rs 1.88 crore (both prices ex-showroom, Mumbai). We know the Rs 70 lakh premium charged for the Ultimate variants is a bit too high, but exclusivity doesn’t come cheap, you see.
