Lexus has launched the new-generation ES 300h sedan in India, at Rs 59.13 lakh. This is the seventh generation of the ES and replaces the older sixth generation car that was on sale. The car gets an entirely new platform, as well as styling and interiors in sync with their latest design language – similar to the Lexus LS500h that we have driven.

This new generation ES is built on Toyota’s GA-K Global Architecture platform, one that it shares with the Camry. This increases its dimensions a fair bit over the last car – 66mm longer, 5mm lower and 46mm wider. The wheelbase is longer by 50mm and the track is wider as well. The whole agenda of this car is to offer luxury with dynamics and performance. To that end, a lot of attention has been paid to the chassis which is rigid, yet lightweight and infused with a lot of high strength steel. There’s also a multi-link rear suspension to allow for better dynamics.

Under the hood is a hybrid-electric system hooked up to a 2.5-litre four-cylinder petrol engine. It gets 215bhp of total power and gets a claimed efficiency of 22.37km/l. Safety has not been given a miss – 10 airbags, hill start assist, vehicle stability control and an anti-theft system are all included. On the inside is a 7-inch LCD instrument panel, a full-colour heads-up display, 12-5-inch screen for the infotainment system. To enhance the driving experience, the car also gets three different driving modes – Eco, normal and Sport.

The Lexus ES 300h is an interesting rival to the likes of the Mercedes-Benz E-Class, the BMW 5 Series and the Audi A6.
