Launched: Mercedes-Benz G63 AMG
Not a G55 anymore, it's a G63. And it's finally on sale in India
With Bruce Willis saving the world from nuclear ruin in a Mercedes G63 AMG in the to-be-released Die Hard movie, it seemed a perfect backdrop to launch that very car in India.
It won't handle like a car, but it can take a pounding on rough terrain, and it can safely wade through 60cm of water or slush.
In its 34th year, the G you see here is the second version of the car in India after the G55 AMG that was introduced a couple of years back. This 5.5-litre 536bhp, 760Nm powerhouse can drive the beast to 100kph in 5.4 secs.
But that's not what you get a G for. This purpose-built machine has three differential locks - one for the front axle, one for the rear axle and a third for both axles. As usual, the G doesn't use a monocoque like other SUVs and sticks to the rugged body-on-chassis arrangement. This means it won't handle like a car, but it can take a pounding on rough terrain. And it can safely wade through 60cm of water or slush. Also, the new 7-speed auto replaces the earlier 5-speeder.
With this monstrous engine, rest assured even its appetite will be monstrous. If you are careful, a full tank will last about 220-250kms. So if you want to explore the unexplored in this car, reserve some space for fuel cans alongwith your luggage. The G63 AMG costs a breathtaking Rs 1.46 crore (ex-showroom, Mumbai). If that's out of bounds, you could see the car in action in 'A Good Day to Die Hard' releasing this Friday.
