Mercedes-Benz is really coming into its own in India now. The A-Class is scheduled for a May-end launch, a spanking new dealership was inaugurated only yesterday and, as we'd told you earlier, MB has launched the all-new, second-gen GL-Class today.

Available only as the GL 350 CDI for the time being, the new GL is powered by a 3-litre V6 diesel that puts out 258bhp and 620Nm of torque, which is channelled by a 7-speed, G-Tronic automatic 'box to all four wheels, thanks to its 4MATIC all-wheel drive system.

When it comes to gizmos, the GL will not disappoint you -  a 360-degree camera, Night View Assist Plus, Intelligent Light Assist, Collision Prevention Assist, Attention Assist, DISTRONIC Assist, Active Park Assistant, Brake Assist, PRE-SAFE safety system, Football Assist (made up that last one, just to see if you were paying attention. That's TopGear's version of the Attention Assist, if you will). A total of 9 airbags should be enough to ensure none of your organs are re-shaped if the car meets with an accident.

There's only the "Launch Edition" variant on offer for now (with an AMG bodykit and 21" alloys, no less), as the first 100 units are completely-built units (CBUs), and Mercedes shall start assembling the GL at its Chakan plant in September, which is when equipment levels, the total number of variants and price might change.

Ah, the price. The new GL will be yours for a very princely sum of Rs 77.5 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi). Still a very reasonable price to pay for off-road thrills in S-Class-grade luxury. What say you, TopGearers?
