Leaked: First shots of the Mercedes CLA
Merc's compact, swoopy new four-door emerges on the web way before its unveil in Detroit
Come 2013, Mercedes will be launching the CLA at the Detroit Motor Show. Yes, this is the production-ready version of the CSC (Concept Style Coupe) shown at the Beijing Motor Show earlier this year. The CLA will be aimed at customers looking for something sporty and cheaper than the C-Class. Borrowing the four-door coupe styling from the bigger CLS, the CLA is based on Mercedes’s medium front-drive architecture (MFA), the same platform that underpins the B-Class, and the soon-to-be-launched A-Class.
As you can see, the front styling has more than a passing resemblance to the A-Class, while the rear is all-new. A lot has gone into making CLA’s styling youthful, as Mercedes wants to appeal to younger buyers who have jumped ship to BMW showrooms. Under the hood, the CLA will be powered by a 1.8-litre petrol, while the diesel will be a 2-litre motor, both sending power to the front wheels.
For those looking for some AMG magic on the CLA will have to wait a bit longer; but going by AMG’s press release, it seems to be worth it. In its CLA45 AMG avatar, the CLA will be powered by a turbocharged 2.0-litre, inline four-cylinder petrol engine. The engine will make 211bhp and 400Nm of torque that will be sent to all four wheels via a specifically-adapted 4MATIC system.
The CLA will be launched in India by the end of 2013, as it will be assembled alongside the A and B-Class. Mercedes will keep costs in check by assembling the CLA in India, and that will give it a pricing edge over its competitors.
