Maruti Alto 800 launched
Alto revives the 800 name. Will be sold along with the K10 version. Time to rejoice then?
Maruti has officially announced the arrival of their all-new Alto, which was no big secret, considering we already have our first drive. Dubbed the Alto 800, this will be the only non-K10 version on sale now. The big pitch is obviously the price of the car that starts at Rs 2.44 lakh for the standard version. The next in line, LX variant gets air-conditioning and will come for Rs 2.76 lakh. The top-end LXi version gets front power windows and power steering as available at Rs 2.99 lakh (all prices, ex-showroom, Delhi).
But most importantly the car gets more space inside the cabin.
The top-end LXi also gets the option of a driver’s side airbag, but that will obviously cost a little extra. Maruti also introduced CNG versions of the car, priced at Rs 3.19 lakh, Rs 3.37 lakh and Rs 3.56 lakh (again, all ex-Delhi) for the standard, LX and LXi versions respectively. Maruti claims that the Alto will deliver a fuel economy figure of 22.74kpl in petrol version and 30.46km/kg of CNG used.
According to Maruti, the new Alto 800 has been keeping their engineers busy, which shows in the new changes that include a new manifold, higher compression ratio and lighter crankshaft to improve the torque figures. A new gearbox has also been introduced to make the gearshifts smoother than before.
But most importantly the car gets more space inside the cabin. The rear legroom is up by 11mm while the headroom is up by 23mm. The car’s width has been increased by 15mm as well. Maruti says that this car should help them revive the slow sales of petrol powered cars. What do you think TopGear.comers? Do you like the looks of this new Alto or was the older one much better?
