You may have heard of the Alpina brand before. It's a firm that deals exclusively in turning up the wick on BMWs, and has been at it since the 1960s, working closely with BMW's engineers to stretch the dynamic capabilities of every BeeEm. Alpinas have been available as "spicier-than-stock" versions of existing BMWs for many years, but now, there's a new one. And Alpina claims it is the fastest diesel car in production.

It's called the D3 Bi-Turbo, and it is based on the current-generation 3 series. From the outside, it doesn't look much different from the standard car, but go over it with a fine-toothed comb, and you shall see a few extra aero bits, new quad exhausts and the 19-inch signature multi-spoke Alpina wheels. Interior enhancements are subtle too, with a few Alpina logos scattered around, a plaque bearing the car's build number on the dash, the instrument cluster bathed in Alpina Blue, and Lavalina leather draped over the steering wheel. And if you so desire, Alpina's craftsmen can tailor the leather-lined, wood-ensconced interior to your tastes.

But that's not what you want to know. What you want to know is the heart of the matter, and it is this - a 3-litre, twin-turbo straight-six diesel motor that puts out 350bhp. Now, that may not sound like a lot, but then you've got the torque - 700 Newton-metres of it. That's a lot more than the upcoming BMW M3/M4 will offer, and it is only 40Nm shy of BMW's very own tri-turbo M Performance engine in the M550d. The 3 series is a smaller, lighter car, and with the power going to the rear wheels through the rapid eight-speed ZF auto 'box, the results are there for all to see: 0-100kph is done away with in 4.6 seconds, which is 0.1sec quicker than that monstrous triple-turbo diesel-powered 5. And since the M550d is limited to 250kph, this delimited 3er is faster, with a top whack of 278kph.

It may be the fastest diesel car in production, but it doesn't forget the 'diesel' bit - so according to Alpina, it will still do 18.8kpl.

The D3 Bi-Turbo has been priced at Rs 46.5 lakh in the UK, and with Alpina churning out less than 2000 cars a year, it's bound to offer plenty of exclusivity.

Now watch the video below and tell us, what do you think of the world's fastest diesel-propelled BMW?
