We're now just weeks away from Diwali, and the launch season is peaking at just the right time. Newer variants are popping up every second day, with today being no exception.

Mercedes-Benz have today launched the ML 250 CDI variant of the M-Class SUV in India. The M-Class, in 250 CDI trim, carries a smaller, less powerful 2.2-litre 4-cylinder diesel engine that churns out 204bhp and 500Nm of torque, and is mated to the same 7-speed automatic gearbox as seen on the ML 350 CDI. In terms of features both inside and out, the ML 250 CDI mirrors the ML 350 CDI's equipment list.

What stands out here is the fact that the launch of the ML 250 CDI also marks the beginning of the assembly of the ML-Class at Merc's facility in Chakan, Pune, and also the opening of its new state-of-the-art paint shop.

Commenting on the occasion, Peter Honegg, Managing Director & CEO, Mercedes-Benz India said, "The M-Class 250 CDI is the first M-Class ever to be offered from a local production outside Mercedes-Benz’s SUV plant in Tuscaloosa, USA. India becomes the first market in the world to enjoy this elite status and further highlights Daimler AG’s focus and commitment on the Indian market."

And now that the M-Class is assembled locally, the ML 250 CDI has been priced at Rs 45.64 lakh (all prices ex-showroom, Pune), nearly Rs 10.5 lakh cheaper than the noticeably more powerful ML 350 CDI variant that was launched earlier this year.

Think the cheaper ML can eat into the BMW X3 and Audi Q5's sales? We await your comments, TopGearers.
