At the launch of the new GL-Class a few months back, Mercedes-Benz said that it would start assembling the GL at its plant in Chakan, Pune sometime in September, once all "Launch Edition" CBU units were sold out. It didn't take very long for that to happen, for Mercedes commenced local assembly of the GL-Class in Pune today itself.

Never before had a GL-Class been assembled outside of Merc's Tuscaloosa plant in the US of A, until today. Yes, the Chakan plant is only the second Mercedes set-up in the world to be churning out GLs. Merc says that assembling the second-gen GL locally will help meet growing demand, provide flexible production options and most importantly, bring down the price. Now we're talking!

Curious to know the drop in price? Well, the GL 350 CDI Launch Edition cost Rs 77.5 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi), and the locally-assembled example will cost Rs 72.58 lakh (ex-showroom, Pune). You can have your GL in black, white (with a beige interior), or in silver, if you'd like the GL's leather-lined innards hued black.

With that Rs 5 lakh drop, you'd naturally want to know if you should buy one for yourself. In which case, you can read our review of the GL 350 CDI by clicking on these blue words.
