Munjal Savla wins at the Colombo Night Race 2012
Mumbai-based racer emerges victorious in the Race Polo at the Electric Peacock Festival street race
Races at night are situations Polo R Cup drivers aren't really familiar with, and rightly, the Colombo Night Race 2012 was always going to be a challenge. This however, didn't faze the young Polo R Cup drivers, who went into the qualifying session all guns blazing.
Early daybreak and other time constraints meant that the qualifying session was reduced to 3 timed laps, leaving no time for the drivers to get a feel of the circuit. Mumbai's Munjal Savla dominated qualifying and secured pole position. The race too was no different, with Savla leading throughout and finishing in 1st place.
Chennai's Polo R Cup Pro-Category 2012 champion A.Sandeep Kumar made one place up the grid to finish 2nd, whereas 2012 JK Tyre National Karting champion Ameya Bafna from Mumbai ended 3rd after starting the race from 2nd place.
Savla, visibly ecstatic on his incredible win, said, "Winning here for the second time in a row feels amazing. Winning the pole position by a second made me confident of winning the race. Though I started with a few mistakes in Lap 1, I managed to keep my lead and made no further errors."
Prithviraj Siddappa, Head of Volkswagen Motorsport India commented, "The Colombo Night Race last year is a memorable experience and this year it was incredible with drivers enjoying this experience thoroughly. It requires special fitness on both physical and mental level to be driving under flood lights on a street circuit but the racers adapted quickly to the situation. Our drivers proved their mettle by bringing out excellent results here in Colombo and we are proud of them."
