Out now: New Force Gurkha

After months of anticipation Force Motors have finally unveiled its own Mahindra Thar rival — the Gurkha SUV.

Power will come from a 2.6-litre diesel engine, which develops 82bhp and 230Nm of torque. But this engine is only BSIII compliant for now which means it will not be available in Tier-I cities. A BSIV version will be launched by September-October this year.

The car is available in three trim versions. A base 4x2 soft-top version which will retail at Rs 6.50 lakh followed by a 4x4 soft-top which retails for Rs 8.35 lakh. The hard-top 4x4 version comes in at Rs 8.50 lakh. All prices are ex-showroom, Delhi. To put things in perspective, Gurkha's rival the Thar sells for between Rs 4.68-5.20 lakh with its DI engine for the 4x2 and 4x4 versions respectively, while the CRDe version retails for around Rs 7.10 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi) in 4x4 version.

The Gurkha boasts a best-in-class ground clearance of 210 mm. It also gets a distinctive exhaust snorkel for enabling amphibian duties. In terms of styling its easy to see that the Gurkha is based on the lines of the legendary Mercedes Gelandewagen (G-Wagon) and it looks a lot better in person than pictures. The SUV is available in three colours for now.

We can only hope and wait that the BSIV version comes out soon enough for us to finally have a credible Thar rival.
