Porsche launches the Macan
Porsche's Indonesian tiger is here, but you'll need serious dough to land yourself one
The world isn't even half as mad at Porsche now as it was when the Cayenne was unveiled. The Macan is like a Cayenne put through a photocopier at 75 per cent, and since the world – including India – has come to accept SUVs that actually aspire to be sportscars, Porsche's now launched its latest product in our market.
There will be two variants on sale initially: the frugal, sensible version in the form of the Macan S Diesel (3.0-litre V6, 241bhp, 580Nm), and the balls-out, petrol-guzzling Macan Turbo (3.6-litre twin-turbo V6, 394bhp, 550Nm). The Turbo is, obviously, very fast. It'll do 0-100kph in just 4.8 seconds, and top out at 266kph. Not like the diesel is anything you'd call 'slow', since it cracks the run to 100kph in a scant 6.3 seconds, and touches 230kph. Spec your Macan with the Sport Chrono pack, and you shave 0.2 seconds off the 0-100 time. Remember, every millisecond counts.
Both engines are mated to a seven-speed PDK 'box, and all those Stuttgart-bred ponies are sent to all four wheels in measured doses, thanks to the latest generation of Porsche's Traction Management system.
Porsche's asking for Rs 98.18 lakh for the Macan S Diesel, and Rs 1.08 crore for the Turbo (all prices, ex-showroom, Maharashtra). Yes, that is a lot of money to pay for a car that's been spun off the same platform that underpins the Audi Q5 (which, with the same engine as the Macan S Diesel, costs Rs 71.58 lakh, on-road, Mumbai), but just to soothe your frazzled mind, Porsche has very nicely added some features to the Macan as standard for India, including a hi-po stereo, an electrically-operated tailgate, three-zone climate control, bi-xenon headlights, lighting package and air suspension.
Still, even with all those goodies, those are properly high prices, especially when you factor in the Cayenne Diesel's ex-showroom asking price of Rs 79.06 lakh. That said, when we reviewed the Macan S, we found it to be the definitive driver's SUV.
