Renault Duster here in 2012

Scorpio, Safari... be very afraid.

By the second half of 2012, Renault will bring the Duster SUV to Indian showrooms. When it arrives, the Duster will be Renault’s third offering in India after the Fluence sedan – recently launched and the Koleos SUV – just around the corner.

The best part? The Duster will not be imported, nor will it be assembled as a completely knocked down kit. Renault will be manufacturing the SUV from the ground up at their production facility in Oragadam outside Chennai. So the car will have no additional duties or taxes. This means, you can expect the Duster to be priced between Rs 9-12 lakh, making it serious competition for the Mahindra Scorpio and Tata Safari.

Besides, the Duster will plug that long-left hole in the Indian market for an SUV between the Scorpio/Safari segment and the premium Endeavour/Outlander/Fortuner/CR-V segment.

The company hasn’t confirmed any engine specifications, but expect the current 1.5 diesel which was in the Logan and is currently in the Fluence to be available in a different state of tune. The transmission will be a five-speed manual with power going to all four wheels. Also, a cheaper, two-wheel drive version will also be on the cards.
