It has been a long wait for the Tata Nexon. Having made its debut in concept form at the 2014 Auto Expo, the swank little SUV has finally arrived, and the pricing is set to get people talking. But first, let's take a look at the car.

It hasn't moved too far away from the concept, and while it does have a crossover-like feel to it, you can't deny the fact that it is a striking, bold design – one that may even polarise opinion. And for that, one must applaud Tata.

Engine options include a 1.2-litre, three-cylinder petrol (108bhp, 170Nm) and a 1.5-litre, four-cylinder diesel (108bhp, 260Nm). Both engines are mated to a six-speed manual, and an AMT variant will debut sometime down the road. It gets three drive modes and an impressive 209mm of ground clearance, but don't be tricked into thinking you can go off-roading in this. There are no plans to introduce an AWD version, Tata officials confirmed at the launch.

Feature-wise, the top-end XZ+ trim is properly loaded: projector headlamps, reverse camera, 16-inch alloys, a touchscreen infotainment system, Harman stereo with eight speakers, driver's seat height adjust, among other things. Also, two airbags and ABS are standard across the range.

The base XE trim is pretty barebones: it only gets AC, power steering, safety equipment and wind-up windows at the back. Its real purpose in life is to provide a low sticker price for the range, which it meets: the petrol XE starts at ₹5.85 lakh, a price at which it undercuts the king of the segment – the Maruti Vitara Brezza – by a whopping ₹1.5 lakh. But that's an unfair comparison, considering the Brezza doesn't have a petrol variant. The difference between the equivalent diesel trims is a mere ₹45-50k.

So while it is aiming to lure crowds in with the starting price, clearly, Tata isn't playing the price card with the Nexon. It is hoping people like it for what it is – not for how much cheaper it is. And going by our initial impressions, that may not be such a hard thing to do for the Nexon.

The complete price list(ex-showroom, Delhi) is as follows :
XE - ₹ 5.85 lakh
XM - ₹ 6.5 lakh
XT - ₹ 7.3 lakh
XZ+ - ₹ 8.45 lakh
XZ+ w/ dual-tone roof - ₹ 8.6 lakh

XE - ₹ 6.85 lakh
XM - ₹ 7.4 lakh
XT - ₹ 8.15 lakh
XZ+ - ₹ 9.3 lakh
XZ+ w/ dual-tone roof - ₹ 9.45 lakh
