This is the new Datsun 'Go'
Datsun is back in action with a brand-new budget hatchback, to go on sale in India early-2014
Amidst much fanfare, the Datsun brand was relauched in India today. The brand has been missing from the auto industry for over three decades now, and India seems to be one of the first places where Datsun will see the light of day again. Its first product is the first of a total of 10 new products that Nissan intends to launch by 2016, according to Carlos Ghosn, President and CEO of Nissan. Unlike the brand associated with the front-engined, rear-wheel-drive 'Z' cars of yesteryear, this time, Datsun has been repositioned as a budget brand.
The first offering from Datsun in India will be the Datsun 'Go'. The five-door, front-wheel drive hatchback measures under 4 metres in length, and is powered by a 1.2-litre petrol engine paired with a five-speed manual transmission, just like any other petrol-engined hatchback on sale in the country. Datsun is still mum on power and torque figures, though we'd expect the Go to have somewhere around 60-85bhp.
The Go is expected to be priced below the Rs 4 lakh mark to help rope in first-time buyers. Such an aggressive price is achieved by keeping 100 per cent content localisation. Sales will start early next year in India.
