Volkswagen will be competing in the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb this year with an electric prototype racecar called the I.D. R Pikes Peak. This car is the latest Volkswagen’s I.D. electric cars to be unveiled and is the sportiest one yet.

Volkswagen has not revealed too much about the car yet – we do not know the capacity of its batteries, power and torque figures, or crucially, its weight. However, we do know that it will be all-wheel drive set up and will be driven by Romain Dumas. The I.D. R Pikes Peak represents what Volkswagen can do with electrification on the performance front, and gives a direction to future cars from Volkswagen R, the German marquee’s performance wing. It also signals a closer cooperation between Volkswagen R and Volkswagen Motorsport in the future.

"We want to be at the forefront of electromobility with Volkswagen and the I.D. family," said Volkswagen board member for Development, Dr. Frank Welsch. "Competing in the most famous hill climb in the world with the I.D. R Pikes Peak not only has symbolic meaning, but is also a valuable test for the general development of electric cars."

The Pikes Peak International Hill Climb will be taking place on June 24 this year. Having been held since 1916, it traces a 19.99km route with the altitude changing from 2,800m to 4,300m above sea level.
