MotoGP: Pole in Brno for Marquez

Posted by Amaan Ahmed at 14:27 pm on Saturday August 16, 2014

Getting used to these qualifying session results, aren't we? We're now into the 11th round of the 2014/15 season, and on those 11 weekends, Marc Marquez has now set nine pole-fetching lap times with another scarily accurate display of controlled lunacy at Brno.

He was the quickest rider on the circuit from the very first time he stepped out in Q2, and as expected, he posted the fastest lap before all riders pitted for tyre swaps. Back out on the track, this time, Marquez was tailed by the Ducati factory team-bound Andrea Iannone, who cleverly adopted the tactics used by his soon-to-be team-mate Andrea Dovizioso. He stuck close to the world champion's rear wheel, making full use of the slipstream provided by the Honda, and posted a lap time three-thousandths of a second faster to go top of the charts.

That didn't last very long, though, as Marquez went for a second hot lap, and this time, the Italian just couldn't keep up, as MM93 pushed hard and set the fastest lap time to snatch pole position.

Dovizioso continued his good qualifying form with a time that fetched him the second spot on the front row, pushing Iannone to third by a mere 0.012s. Yes, you read that right - that's two Ducatis on the front row.

Trailing the two Andreas is a Yamaha, and no, it's not a factory bike. Tech3 Yamaha's Bradley Smith put in a blisteringly fast lap at the end of Q2 to shift Dani Pedrosa down to fifth place.

The factory Yamahas followed the Honda, with Jorge Lorenzo managing to dodge a potential fourth-row start by taking sixth in the dying stages of the Qualifying session, and Valentino Rossi struggling to seventh, after taking a tumble in FP4 and hurting the little finger on his left hand.

Marquez will be gunning for 11/11 tomorrow. Can someone finally halt the streak?
