It’s ridiculous when you come to think of how much a top-of-the-line smartphone costs these days. Of course, there’s the cost of technology and innovation argument, but it’s still a little hard to swallow a price tag of over half a lakh when you’re buying a smartphone.

Now the good folks at Lenovo too have come up with the Vibe series halo device, complete with a Snapdragon 800 quad-core processor, 2GB RAM, 5.5-inch IPS display, 13 megapixel primary camera and 3000mAh battery... all uncompromised, top-of-the-line specs. And that too at Rs 31,999.

The Lenovo Vibe series had done a great job of giving a premium feel to the Vibe X, and it’s no different with the Vibe Z. Build is light but not cheap. It’s a unified body design with no expandable memory and encased battery. The interface is typical Lenovo, with no app drawer, and now, the Vibe Z also features a multi-window functionality, though limited to a few apps.

On using the device, it immediately struck us how fast it was. High-end games ran without a hiccup. The benchmarking was especially surprising, as AnTuTu ranked it a notch above the Galaxy Note 3, and 3DMark maxed out in two out of three tests. There’s no denying that the Vibe Z is a performance powerhouse, and thankfully, it had the battery to support that kind of power.

The test unit we had seemed to have a problem with the rear camera, which would take ridiculously long with getting the right focus. This problem, however, seems specific to the unit we had, as it doesn’t seem to be a complaint with other owners. Still, it’s a point worth mentioning as it critically hampered our camera tests. That said, the pics that we did manage to click in focus were quite sharp and crisp. The 5MP front camera is a selfie-addict’s dream, and it does come with a filter to ‘beautify’ your face.

Lenovo has proven that it’s taking its mobile platform seriously, with this show of muscle. Top-of-the-line hardware along with a library of apps that make the device stand out is something that just can’t be ignored. The Vibe Z has undoubtedly raised our expectations from Lenovo.
