If you’ve been keeping up with our Options List section (and why wouldn’t you, it’s brilliant), then you will recall how much we loved the LG Optimus G.

It has sturdy build quality capable of taking some manhandling, a sharp display and a form factor that makes it feel great, whether in your pocket or your hand. Now, LG has released a new version of the phone that is bigger and boasts a number of updated features and tweaks that add more function to the device.

Among the new features in the Optimus G Pro are a faster processor, full HD display along with higher pixel density at 401ppi, and even a back that opens with the option of expandable memory. There are other tweaks as well, one of the more notable ones being the 2.1 megapixel front camera that also records video in full HD. The 13MP rear camera was not the best feature of the Optimus G, and that remains unchanged here. It will get the job done, but its low light performance leaves a bit to be desired.

LG has packed the Optimus G Pro with a decent number of features and apps that make the phone extremely functional. It has a smart screen function that keeps the display active as long as you’re looking at it, and also pauses video when you’re looking somewhere else.

The in-built apps range from gimmicky to very useful – thankfully more the latter than the former. You have a universal remote controller capable of controlling your complete home theater through the device’s IR blaster, along with a number of other apps that are very functional in note-taking, screen grabbing and even performance optimising.

Big phones are not everyone’s cup of tea. We aren’t too pleased with the trend of slapping a slate to your face when taking a call. That said, the screen does have its advantages and it’s not hard to see the appeal in these devices. And although the LG Optimus G Pro is a late entry into the big-screen race, it is a contender worth checking before you opt for the usual suspects.
