Review: Honda Dream Neo

When Honda Motorcycles and Scooter India launched the Dream Yuga in 2012, it started a whole new chapter in the Indian motorcycle industry. Honda is clearly aiming for the top of the podium, a position that its erstwhile partner Hero has occupied for years now. And for the mission, Honda is banking big on its ‘Dream’ series of motorcycles.

The Dream Neo is the cheapest Honda motorcycle in India, slotted below the Yuga and competing with Hero’s Splendor and Bajaj’s Discover T. But the cheapest Honda doesn’t feel cheap in any way. Build quality and fit and finish are top notch, and while the styling may look similar to the Yuga’s, its new tail section gives it a new identity.

At the Neo’s heart is a refined 110cc motor good for 8.25bhp and 8.63Nm. The Neo is the first motorcycle based on the revolutionary Honda Eco Technology, which improves power output and efficiency. Honda is claiming 74kpl for the Neo, but we’re yet to validate that.

On the move, the lightweight Neo feels nimble and its responsive engine will put a smile on your face. Ride and handling is typical Honda – it soaks up bumps effortlessly, and the butter-smooth handling only heightens the experience. A smooth four-speed ’box complements the engine.

The irritant here is the absence of an optional front disc brake – drum brakes can never give you the reassurance of discs.

The verdict
A no-nonsense everyday commuter. Good build quality, and a worthy alternative to made-in-India entry-level motorcycles.
