Review: Mahindra Verito Executive Edition

Think about an entry-level sedan and we are sure you will think of all the cars from the newly launched Honda Amaze to the segment-topper Maruti Swift Dzire. The one name that may not pop up in your mind is the Mahindra Verito, which has been around for some time now. Well, Mahindra wants to change that scenario and is now aiming for the young executive pie. So how does Mahindra intend to do this? With the Verito ‘Executive Edition’ of course!
Looks were not the strongest selling point for the erstwhile Logan and as time passed by, it looked all the more dated. Mahindra had done its bit by throwing in cosmetic changes to keep it looking fresh, but that earlier dented image of its predecessor still remains. What the Verito brings along is a reworked headlight cluster with rearranged turn-indicators, angular design front bumpers and the most noticeable change being the big chrome grille upfront. Though at first this might not look like your typical five-slat Mahindra grille seen on their SUV’s. But look closer and you will notice the company has subtly integrated that design element as well.
Moving to the side of the car, things remain unchanged with roof-rails on top for extra cargo carrying capacity. Exclusive to the ‘Executive’ edition are the blacked out B-pillar, new alloy wheel design, side decals that run the length of the car and the pearl white paint finish. Like the front, the rear has also got a noticeable refresh – the number plate has been moved to the boot lid from the rear bumper, the taillights get a clear lens treatment and the bumper now integrates a pair of reflectors too.
Inside, the Verito’s cabin is a familiar place to be, the use of light beige colour adds to the airy feel of the already spacious cabin. And to make the cabin plusher, the ‘Executive’ edition offers leather wrapped steering wheel, leather seats, GPS Satellite Navigation and music system with Bluetooth. There are things that we missed in this car, like steering mounted audio controls and adjustable driver-seat height, which are common to this segment.
What remains unchanged is the 1.5-litre diesel motor that makes 65bhp and 160Nm of torque. And thank god for that! Though this might not sound much on paper, the Verito’s performance is impressive in the real world conditions. In the city, the car will have no problem pulling away from the traffic light as the needle crosses the 1300rpm. The gears slot smoothly and shifts are precise, in addition to a light and progressive clutch action. Though performance is not the reason one would go for this car, but the Verito still manages to impress with a 0-100kph speed of 14.9sec and a top speed of 155kph. If this does not impress you, then the 13.8kpl in city and 18.5kpl on the highway surely will.
The suspension has been tuned in such a way that the Verito has no problems going over bad roads, as it filers out irregular road surfaces with ease. The sedan also manages to impress with its high-speed stability. But if you think that a good ride means handling has been compromised then worry not. The Verito turns into corners well as the tyres provide good grip and hold the car in line. The steering provides decent feedback, but feels a tad light on high speeds. The Verito does mange to impress with its road manners and for a subtle looking family sedan, has a rather sporty attitude.
As mentioned before, the Mahindra Verito Executive Edition might not be the first car to feature on your shopping list, but after spending a day with this car, it does make a strong case for itself. It’s got a decent list of features and spec-to-spec offers mostly everything that the competition does. It’s got a well-sorted ride and the performance is adequate. It offers a spacious cabin and luggage space is better than its competition. The Verito Executive edition trumps the competition with its value-for-money card and the service network that Mahindra has to offer. And with an ex-showroom price of Rs 7.70 lakh in Mumbai, the Verito D6 Executive Edition is almost Rs 15,000-30,000 cheaper than its closest rivals.
