Driving Test: Gaurav Gill
The Indian rally driver gets candid about his favourite driving experiences and preferences
Did you pass your driving test the first time? What was it like?
Yes, I did! It was pretty easy. All I had to do was a figure 8! I was already drifting by then! The instructor also told me to do it in reverse, which I did, and he was shocked because he told me he could never do that himself!
Who taught you to drive?
My mother and a friend of mine. We used take the car out of the house when there was no one home. I finally got caught when the car ran out of fuel one day.
What car did you learn to drive in?
A Maruti Omni, around the neighbourhood, because it was easy to reach the pedals.
What was the first car you bought?
A used Mitsubishi Lancer.
What was the worst car you’ve ever driven?
What’s the best car you’ve ever bought?
A BMW 650i. I love BMWs. They’re real drivers’ cars.
What’s your dream car?
The 1967 Ford Mustang Shelby GT 500 “Eleanor”. I can go on dreaming about it. But I’ve not driven one yet..
What caused your first crash?
I was going too fast and smashed the front fender into the gate of my house. I told my driver to take the blame. But later, my mother found out it was me.
Are you a good driver?
I suppose so! At least, that’s what people tell me.
What’s the worst thing a passenger can say when you’re driving?
To watch out for traffic. I don’t like people sitting next to me if they don’t trust my driving or think they are better drivers.
How clean is your licence?
What’s the fastest you have ever driven?
280kph. But for me, it’s the 0-100kph time that matters.
Where’s your favourite place to drive in the world?
Behind my house here in Delhi, there’s a short section that resembles the Isle of Man TT, with sharp corners over crests. Also, I love the roads in South Africa driving into Cape Town. They’re wide, fast mountain roads with the sea on one side of the cliff.
