Mahindra's new mini-SUV to be called 'Quanto'
M&M's much-awaited baby Xylo slated for a September-end launch
The mini-SUV segment has just started to blossom. The Premier Rio was the first to break onto the scene, Ford drew the covers off its near-production ready EcoSport, Renault launched the Duster and now, it's Mahindra's turn to step into the arena.
Known as the U203 (the project code-name for the vehicle) or more commonly, the baby Xylo in motoring circles, Mahindra have decided to give it a name. The new compact offering from the SUV-specialist has been christened 'Quanto'. A derivative of the word 'Quantum', the Quanto name has been chosen by Mahindra to associate the new vehicle with qualities like maximum space, seats, power and performance.
M&M claim the Quanto has the DNA of its rugged SUV siblings, and rightly so. The Quanto is based on the Ingenio pick-up platform, which in turn is based on the popular Xylo itself. Measuring in at under four metres, the Quanto will be the most compact SUV in Mahindra's current SUV line-up.
The shortened length, according to Mahindra, endow the Quanto with hatchback-rivalling ease of driving and the ability to tackle the rough stuff, with plenty of accommodation to make it a 24x7 car. Being shorter than 4 metres in length will almost certainly, and more crucially, translate to an aggressive price tag.
Speaking at the event, Dr Pawan Goenka, President, Automotive & Farm Equipment Sectors, Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd, “Customer centric Innovation has always been at the heart of any product development at the Mahindra Group. With the Quanto, Mahindra is aiming to fill a need gap in the Indian automotive market for a versatile and compact SUV. We are confident that with its unique value proposition, the Quanto will carve out a segment for itself in the market. The Quanto will cater to the needs of young urban India which enjoys an active lifestyle. We expect the Quanto to offer an exciting upgrade at a premium to customers who are otherwise looking for premium diesel hatchbacks or entry level diesel sedans”.
The Quanto is scheduled for launch in the second half of September. Does it generate "Quanto" interest in your minds? The comments section awaits, TopGear.commers.
