Mahindra-SsangYong is all set to make its Indian debut on October 17th with the Rexton W. Unlike what SsangYong-Mahindra showed us at the Auto Expo 2012, this is the third generation of the Rexton that we’ll see. In case you're wondering what 'W' stands for, Mahindra claims it's 'Work of art'. It's ok, you can ponder on that for a second before reading on.

Under the hood, you can expect a 2696cc diesel engine that puts out 165bhp and 340Nm of torque mated to a 6-speed manual or 5-speed auto transmission. The Rexton W will have a top speed of 180kph. The interiors of the Rexton W compliment the modern exterior styling and first impressions are that they'll be at par with luxury SUV makers.

XUV500 last year helped Mahindra stamp its presence on the segment of premium SUVs

The Rexton will be assembled in Mahindra’s Chakan facility where it currently makes the XUV500. Prices are yet to be announced, but expect it to be in the range of Rs 24 to 28 lakh. The Rexton will be competing with the Toyota Fortuner, Chevrolet Captiva and the Hyundai Santa-Fe.

The first generation Rexton was built on the Mercedes M-Class and the third gen is based on the same platform but with a lot of modifications.

Commenting on the upcoming launch, Dr Pawan Goenka, President, Automotive and Farm Equipment Sectors, Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd. & Chairman, SsangYong Motor said, “The launch of the much acclaimed XUV500 last year helped Mahindra stamp its presence on the segment of premium SUVs. The Rexton will be the first SUV from the SsangYong portfolio brought to the Indian market by Mahindra. With the launch of the SsangYong Rexton, we hope to further expand the Mahindra presence in the high-end SUV segment”.

Looks like the Rexton will be stepping into a crowded segment. Think it will have the chops to make it, Topgearers?
