Volkswagen Group Nights are fast becoming a regular before most European Auto Shows. The message is simple - flex some muscle to show the group in all its glory using its arsenal of brands.

On the evening prior to the Geneva Show, VW's trademark group night display was led by the XL1 - VW's most fuel efficient car ever with a fuel consumption figure close to 100kpl. Sounds unreal but is true. Of course the catch is that this is a electric-petrol hybrid which means that although VW will manufacture it - 250 units in the first go - it will be insanely expensive.

Skoda brought out the new Octavia, which is also scheduled to come to India. It's an all new car which is hailed as the car that will play a crucial role in Skoda's business in Europe and India. It looks a well-packaged deal with oodles of style and luxury.

Lamborghini showed an ultra fast, ultra light supercar called Veneno. Named after a fighting bull from 1914, only three units will be made. It has a 750bhp V12 unit which can take the car from 0-100kph in 2.8sec. The car, which looks like a cross between a Batmobile and a Le Mans car makes judicious use of carbonfibre.

Among other cars of note displayed were the 911 GT3, Audi RS6 and the A3 e-tron.
