Porsche reveals 50th anniversary 911

Carrera S gets wider body and bespoke trim to celebrate the half-century. No more power, sadly…

Porsche really knows how to party. To celebrate the 50th anniversary of the one sportscar that sends this industry stuttering into a cliché-ridden hinterland – the 911 – it has really let loose. This is the 50 Years Edition Porsche 911. And it’s a bit fat.

It’s a rear-drive Carrera S, but clothed in the body of the four-wheel drive Carrera 4 which, party fans, means it is a whopping 44mm wider across the rear wheel arches. 44mm! Alas, there is no special tonic to increase the power, so you’re still looking at a 400bhp, 3.8-litre flat-six engine knocking out a 0-100kph time of 4.5 seconds (4.3s with the PDK ‘box) and a top speed of 300kph. Wait, what? No extra power on an anniversary sportscar?

Porsche will instead point you in the direction of the bespoke chrome strips on the fins of the engine compartment grille. Or the special trims on the front air inlets, and a strip across the car between the rear lights. Then you’ll find the five-spoke alloy wheels inspired by the classic ‘Fuchs’ wheels, (fact alert) first fitted to the Porsche 911 of 1966. Here, they’re finished in matt black with machine polished centres.

Just 1,963 models of this 50 Years Edition 911 will be available – because of course, the original car was revealed to the world in September 1963 – and will be available in one of two colours: a dark graphite grey, or a light ‘Geyser’ grey. Each will feature a ‘911 50’ badge in two-tone 3D on the rear, and in the seats' head restraints.

This special edition will make its debut at the Frankfurt motor show later this year – the same show at which the original 911 debuted all those years ago. But we can't help but wonder, where’s the proper lairy widebody with deep dish alloys, the monster power gain, the GT3-spec rear wing, the Martini paintjob?
