Ashok Leyland launches the Stile
Ashok Leyland's first passenger vehicle - a toned-down Nissan Evalia - is now on sale
You've seen this before, and you know what it is. Nissan Evalia? Not all of it, no. It's Ashok Leyland's Stile, and it is 90% Evalia, and 10% passenger car-like LCV.
Most of it is the Evalia, save for that face with the new headlamps, grille and a new bumper. Most importantly though, you get sliding windows for the second row passengers, not the butterfly ones.
It is available only with the 1.5-litre K9K diesel engine for the time being, with a five-speed manual gearbox. Here, the engine is detuned to produce only 75bhp and 185m of torque, 10 horses and 15 torques down on the Nissan. There will be a CNG variant, yes, but for now, what you should know is that the Stile is available in three trims, and five, seven or eight-seater guises.
In order to price it as low as possible, Ashok Leyland has decided to leave out stuff like ABS and airbags, even as options. You don't even get a tachometer, adjustable door mirrors or a stereo, not even on the top-spec model.
The base LE gets a tilt-adjustable steering wheel, aircon, and power steering. Unpainted bumpers mean that this should be ideal for the taxi business. In LS trim, you can have central locking, front power windows, painted bumpers, and AC vents for second row passengers. And if you go for the top-end LX, you will be treated to luxuries like fabric seats, a centre console finished in silver and painted wing mirrors.
With all the skimping on features, you'd expect the Stile to be quite cheap. And it is, if you compare it to its by-comparison feature-laden cousin. The Stile range starts at Rs 7.49 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi), which is a full Rs 1.2 lakh less than the cheapest Evalia. And it's got proper windows.
