Maruti has launched its much awaited Ertiga seven-seater MPV at Rs 5.89 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi) for the base LXi petrol. The base diesel LDi costs Rs 7.30 lakh. While the VXi/VDi versions cost Rs 6.60 lakh/ 7.90 lakh and the top-end ZXi/ZDi, Rs 7.30/8.45 lakh. Maruti's marketing department is calling it the LUV (Life Utility Vehicle) instead of a compact MPV.

The MPV gets an all new 1.4-litre petrol engine with 95bhp and VVT tech. You also get the 1.3 Multijet, 90bhp diesel with a VGT from the SX4. The Ertiga is based on an extended Swift platform and according to Maruti engineers shares a lot of common parts with that car enabling the company to price it so competitively. The dashboard and front seats are a direct lift from the Swift but Maruti has added a tiny differentiator by using beige interiors instead of black.

The highlight of the interior is the middle row seats which can be moved front or back by 240mm for greater legroom. With both rear row of seats folded the Ertiga has a massive 735litre of boot space on offer. The car is available in seven colours and Maruti says that the current prices are only introductory in nature.

Update: Ertiga Mumbai ex-showroom prices have been revealed as: Rs 6.23 lakh for LXi, 6.98 lakh for VXi, 7.68 lakh for ZXi, 7.71 lakh for LDi, 8.34 lakh for VDi, 8.88 lakh for ZDi. Again, all prices are introductory.
