EICMA 2018: Yamaha unveils Niken GT

Read more on:

Just how much can you revolutionise the concept of making motorcycles? According to Yamaha, a lot. You see, after making some of the greatest two-wheelers ever, Yamaha decided that it needed to expand its model line-up and give its customer something quite extraordinary. Like the Yamaha Niken. The Niken, which was launched last year, wasn’t a concept; Yamaha really rolled it out from its production line. And at this year’s EICMA motor show, the Japanese bike maker brought with it a new variant of its quirky motorcycle – the Niken GT.

The MT-09 derived 847cc, three-cylinder engine churns out 113bhp and 87Nm of torque and is mated to a six-speed gearbox. Other bits that are same between the two are suspension (upside-down fork at the front with 110mm of travel and a single shock absorber with 124mm of travel) and brakes (twin 298mm discs up front and a 282mm disc at the rear).

But, being a touring-focused motorcycle it gets a taller windscreen, heated grips, pair of 25-litre panniers, a soft seat and a 12V power outlet. In terms of riding aids, it gets all the features that the standard Niken gets – adjustable traction control, cruise control, a quikshifter and among other features.

It is highly unlikely that the Niken will ever make it to India But, if anyone from Yamaha is reading this, we don’t mind an early Christmas surprise.
