Launched: Yamaha FZ and FZ-S v2.0

Yamaha gave the R15 a second lease of life with the v2.0 upgrade a few years back, but the FZ series has had to soldier on with a few sticker jobs.

Not anymore. The FZ series gets an extensive upgrade along with a creative new suffix - v2.0. So what's the difference between the old and the new FZ series?

Well, a huge chunk of it is cosmetic. Starting with the front headlight, which has been given an angular design. The muscular fuel tank has remained untouched, and so has the 140/60 rear tyre. The most distinctive part of the new FZ series is the redesigned rear tail-light and exhaust system.

The engine gets an all new fuel-injection system that replaces the conventional carburetted system. This should make the FZ v2.0 feel more refined.

Sadly, the engine has lost 4cc that gets the single cylinder's displacement down to 149cc. This has had an overall effect on power as well, which now stands at 13bhp and 12.8Nm of torque. 1bhp and 1Nm lower than the older FZ.

Yamaha claims that though the v2.0 might have lost a pinch of power, it is faster than the outgoing model. This is thanks Yamaha's new Blue Core technology and tweaks done to the chassis, which help take 3kg off the FZ's weight.

What will put a smile on potential buyers' faces is the aggressive price tag. The FZ v2.0 costs Rs 76,250, and the FZ-S v2.0 will cost Rs 78,250 (all prices, ex-showroom Delhi).
