New standards on helmets introduced

Read more on:

The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has issued a new standard for motorcycle helmets - from January 15, 2019, the helmet will be lighter by 300gm. At present, the maximum weight of a helmet is 1.5kg, but after the implementation of the new standard, the weight will be reduced to 1.2kg.

It will also make sure that the helmet manufacturers build the new helmets as per the new standards. The government of India has given six months to the manufacturers to implement the new standards. Also, according to the transport ministry, the sale of non-standard helmets will become a criminal offence.

“In India, riders underestimate the role of helmet and tend to buy cheap headgear, which does not protect them well and this has worsened the situation and given rise to the substandard helmet manufacturers, however, the current move is likely to keep a strict check on the substandard and spurious helmets manufacturing,” said Rajeev Kapur, President, 2 Wheeler Helmet Manufacturers Association.
