Finally answering India's call for a small-capacity, twin-cylinder performance motorcycle, Yamaha Motor India has launched the YZF-R3 at the Buddh International Circuit, Greater Noida.

The YZF-R3, that comes to India via the CKD route from Indonesia, is compact in its dimensions, and looks like a much sharper, beefier and more potent version of the smaller YZF-R15 v2.0. Yamaha's latest performance package looks savagely fast standing still with all its aggressive cuts and sharp angled body panels.

The angular design theme follows through to the part-analogue, part-digital information cluster which houses a large analogue tachometer, digital speedo, trip meter, clock, water temperature and a fuel gauge. There’s also a gear-shift indicator which will prove quite handy on a track day.

The highlight of the YZF-R3 lies at the heart of its diamond frame chassis - the all-new high-revving, fuel-injected, twin-cylinder 321cc motor that develops a maximum power of 41.5bhp at 10,750rpm and 29.6Nm of torque at 9,000rpm. Even with a twin cylinder motor the R3 tips the scales at 169kg. So if there’s anything you can be assured of with this bike, it’s having a good power-to-weight ratio on hand.

Surprisingly, the YZF-R3 has been launched without an ABS unit, but Yamaha claims that it will add ABS as an option in the months to come. As of today, stopping power comes in the form of single discs; 298mm upfront and 220mm at the rear.

Available in Racing blue and Black paint shades, the YZF-R3 is priced at Rs.3.25 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi). This makes it the third of its kind in India as far as the twin-cyl, 300cc segment goes, after the Kawasaki Ninja 300 priced at Rs 3.60 lakh (ex-showrom, Mumbai) and Benelli TNT 300 retailing at Rs 2.91 lakh (ex-showroom, Mumbai). Given the Yamaha’s aggressive price tag and performance package, it is expected to have more than a few takers.

We're about to hop astride Yamaha's latest performance package at the BIC, so stay tuned for our first impressions of the YZF-R3. Till then, here’s the complete specification: Engine: 321cc, 2cyl in-line, 41.5bhp at 10,750rpm, 29.6Nm at 9000rpm, 6-speed, Fuel tank: 14 litres, kerb weight: 169kg.
