Hyundai to bring Kona EV to India next year
Hyundai will reportedly be launching their first EV in India in the form of the Kona Electric next year. The Kona is a crossover SUV that is a little smaller than the Creta in terms of dimensions (but gets a longer wheelbase) and comes with an electric powertrain. The Kona will be the first EV to be sold by Hyundai in India. Hyundai was considering launching the Ioniq sedan in its EV form as well but decided to go with the Kona considering the appeal that SUVs have at the moment.
Internationally, the Kona comes in two powertrain options – with different capacities and ranges, but it is highly likely that only the smaller one will make it to India. The lithium-ion battery has a capacity of 39.2kWh, and this is hooked up to a motor that makes 134bhp and 395Nm of torque. It will accelerate from 0-100kmph in a claimed 9.7 seconds, has a top speed of 155kph and has a range of 312km.
It looks a little quirky on the outside, with the lack of a grille drawing the most attention. The split headlamps are unconventional as well, but it will surely draw attention. The cladding and its tall stance lend it its SUV-crossover stance, it gets sharp looking 17-inch wheels and a dual tone roof.
The interiors are also significantly different from what you see in the current line-up of Hyundais. The dash has a floating 7-inch display while the climate control buttons and the centre console features a lot of brushed metal. The steering wheel is chunky and the instrument cluster has been designed to look more modern as well.
The Kona will come to India via the CKD route and will be priced above Rs 20 lakh. Hyundai has a bunch of launches lined up for the next two years, and in addition to the Kona, will update the Santa Fe, Tucson and a compact SUV that they haven’t revealed yet.
