Launched: BMW 630d

A few months ago, BMW had launched the 6-Series GT in India but, only in one trim and that too, only in the petrol avatar. Now though, the German carmaker has launched the diesel variant of the 6 GT in two trims – Luxury and M Sport. As far as prices are concerned, you need to shell out Rs 66.5 lakh of the Luxury trim and Rs 73.7 lakh for the M Sport trim (both prices are ex-showroom).

It is powered by a 3-litre, six-cylinder oil-burner which produces 261bhp and 620Nm of torque. That isn't a significant bump in power over its petrol cousin but, the diesel powerplant produces more torque – a whopping 220Nm more than the petrol variant. BMW claims that the 630d will sprint to 100kph from standstill in 6.1s – 0.2s quicker than the petrol. The transmission is an eight-speed automatic. The 6-Series GT is equipped with brake energy regeneration and active start/stop technology for better fuel economy (BMW claims that the 630d will deliver 17 kilometres per litre).

In terms of creature comforts, it gets all the usual equipment as any other BMW on sale right now. Some of the features which are shared between the two trims are adaptive LED headlights, cruise control, wireless charging and four-zone climate control. The Luxury trim receives some extra chrome treatment around the car. It also gets a multifunction steering wheel, electronically adjustable front seats, and three different leather upholstery you can choose from. The M Sport trim, in addition to all the features of the Luxury trim, it is equipped with the M Sport package. It gets M sport brakes with brake callipers, the M Sport body kit that makes it look more aggressive and front seats with memory function and lumbar support.

In terms of in-house entertainment, BMW has got you covered. It gets a 10-inch LCD display at the front, two 10.2-inch displays at the rear, Apple CarPlay and 16 speakers Harman Kardon surround sound system with a total output of 600W.

The 6 GT rivals the Mercedes-Benz E-Class LWB. While the BMW may be a tad powerful, the Merc costs less than the BMW. Well, there’s only one way to settle this – a shootout. Don’t you agree?
