Mercedes tops luxury car sales chart

For the past two years, Mercedes-Benz has been topping the luxury car sales chart in India and looking at the numbers it’s clocked in the first-half of 2018, it seems Merc may just run away with the top laurels by the end of this year. We say this because it has sold 8061 units in the Jan-June 2018 period, giving it a healthy lead over its closest competitor, BMW.

Mercedes recorded a 12.4 per cent year-on-year growth, with the sedan segment registering a 15.2 per cent growth in the same period. Currently, Mercedes’ India line-up is almost at par with its international line-up. Within the first six months, it has already launched seven cars, thus refreshing its product portfolio.

“With our wide range of new generation cars, sedans, SUVs and the performance cars, we are confident to continue the drive, we set for ourselves in the first half,” said Roland Folger, MD and CEO, Mercedes-Benz India.

Following Mercedes is its other German rival, BMW. The BMW group reported a growth of 13 per cent as compared to the first-half of 2017. Not just BMW and Mini, even the two-wheeler arm of BMW, Motorrad, recorded a positive growth.

“Our strategy of introducing new and innovative product segments in the Indian luxury car market has started showing results. The BMW 6 Series Gran Turismo and the BMW X3 have already exceeded our expectations and we see remarkable sales contributions coming from both in the future” said Vikram Pawah, President, BMW Group India.

Another luxury car manufacturer which reported a positive growth is Volvo. With 33 per cent of growth in the first-half of 2018, the Swedish carmaker sold 1242 units. “We are extremely happy with our growth pace and intend to keep up the momentum for the rest of 2018. The recently launched XC40 is our first offering in the entry-level SUV segment and we expect the XC40 to build a new customer base for us and drive sales,” said Charles Frump, MD, Volvo Car India.
